Tamiflu garage sale anyone?

Hilary Butler - Thursday, January 08, 2009

You remember all the paranoia about that pandemic cash-cow called bird flu? You remember that the New Zealand humoured whatsisname... Rumsfeld??   ... who profits gazillions from the company that makes Tamiflu, by buying a few million dollars worth of a useless drug, which wasn't necessary, and is now well past it's use-by date? Well, don't hold your breath, about either the value of Tamiflu, or whether Bird Flu will naturally find it's way here any time soon, or that any vaccine with be worth having.

A recent news item pointed out that Tamiflu is now 99% resistant to some flu strains, not that that will prevent the medical profession continuing to ring the tills of the company.  Ironically, the REASON they were admitting it, was as part of a campaign to get everyone to have a flu shot! And how worth having are they??? Not very.

To make things more interesting, hard on the heels of the argument that because Tamiflu is now useless, you should have a useless vaccine, comes the admission, after most people have already had their shot this year... that the B strains in the community aren't the ones in the flu vaccine. Similarly, last years formulation was another monumental mismatch stuff up as well.  In fact, according to Lone Simonsen's study, mismatches have been a prominent feature of the last decade, yet people still line up for their shot.  But do these people realise that a driving factor in influenza virulence, has been the mismatches of the last decade? The last sentence of this article expresses the medical profession's concern
The current vaccine failures highlight shortcomings in vaccine target selection, which will continue to deteriorate as influenza evolution is driven by vaccine mismatches and productive homologous recombination.

On the other hand if a person's vitamin D levels is the key to whether or not they get the flu,  then it doesn't matter how much the virus mutates, does it?

To recap: Tamiflu gets it’s profit: vaccine manufacturers their profits: people get dubious needles and drugs: and excuses continue to flourish like rampant garden weeds.., And seed, to generate a whole new crop.... while everyone, except Cannell ignores Vitamin D, which has been talked about for decades by the alternative medicine quacks.  But bless him, perhaps he doesn’t know that.

Of course, you know you should never listen to either alternative medicine quacks, or your grandmother, because that's not scientific progress....

Th
is situation could be classified alongside a Monty Pythonesque spoof, if it wasn't actually a tragedy of monumental proportions.  The tragedy being that the majority of people in the world believe that drug companies, vaccine companies, and people who spout the drug/shot message can do no wrong, and all deserve Nobel Prizes for "improving the lot of humanity."

Meanwhile, could I suggest something constructive, like making sure your 25-hydroxy-vitamin D blood test is above 50 ng/ml? preferably, around 80? Make sure you get a good dose of mid-day sun, with no sunscreen, or clothes covering.  Ideally, the sun is the best way to get vitamin D because the body self-regulates, and you won't get an overdose, which is possible with supplements.  If however, you are sun-averse, remember that adults need at least 5,000 IU per day, and even more in winter.  Children need at least 1,000 IU per day per every 25 pounds of body weight,  and if you don’t yet know about vitamin D, then please read this.

It just might be more useful to you than any flu shot could possible be.. and if you do happen to get the flu, there's always olive leaf extract, elderberry extract, vitamin C, vitamin D and good old grandma's chicken soup, which was first rolled out in a mismatch year, when there was also a vaccine shortage.  It seems, that it really does work....
